The next blower came from another direction and swept beneath my skates, dropping me fiercely onto ice that was so strong and thick, I practically bounced off of it. I got up and quickly skated back to shore, attempting to beat another gust. Dan was back on the sidelines, as well, wearing his usual grin. I wanted to ask him—the weather guy—how we could have made such a major miscalculation, but before I could even open my mouth, he said with a mischievous grin: “I knew we had a short window today. It was worth it.”

I unlaced my skates and tried to swig from my bottle of water—frozen solid. I reached into my pack for another beer instead, to hydrate and fuel me for the long, icy, and stormy hike back. Luckily, it’s harder to freeze beer.

This wasn’t just any snow. It blighted out the sun, sent down thick flakes, blew in furious gusts, and shot down the temperatures immediately. We shuffled along the icy trail, balancing with our hockey sticks, stopping occasionally to squint through blowing flurries to double-check our route, and taking swigs of slushy beer. Despite the abominable conditions, the positive morale and laughter never left us. “All ice! Extremely radical! All ice!”
